A private arbitrator ordered The Washington Post to reinstate opinion columnist Karen Attiah and compensate her with back pay after her September firing.
Sarah Miller Espinosa ruled Thursday that the newspaper lacked “good and sufficient cause” to terminate Attiah, violated its labor agreement, and failed to prove she engaged in gross misconduct.
Attiah was fired over social media posts about the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk; she said the ruling confirms her dismissal was wrongful and that she is willing to return.
The Post said it respects the arbitration process and declined further comment, leaving the decision as a labor and free-expression test case inside a major U.S. newsroom.
