South Korea Approves $170 Million Tanzania AI Institute Loan, Opening First EDCF AI Project

$170 million in South Korean financing will build an AI and digital technology institute in Tanzania, the first artificial-intelligence project backed by Seoul’s Economic Development Cooperation Fund.
The institute will train students in AI, robotics, data analytics and IoT, while funding classrooms, laboratories, network systems and equipment including drones, 3D printers and robotics tools.
For Tanzania, the project supports a push to deepen its digital workforce and attract foreign capital under Vision 2050, which targets a $1 trillion economy and $7,000 per capita income by 2050.
The loan also gives South Korean tech companies a foothold in East Africa’s growing technology market as Tanzania broadens investment ties after strained relations with some Western partners.
