Only a few organic-rich spectra had signal strong enough for functional-group identification, so the result expands Enceladus’s chemical inventory rather than proving exact molecules or any biological activity.
The finding adds to separate Cassini-era evidence for a global salty ocean, molecular hydrogen reported in 2017, complex organics in 2018, and phosphate signatures in 2023—strengthening Enceladus’s habitability case, not confirming life.
Cassini was destroyed in 2017, so resolving exact molecular structures now depends on future plume missions with higher-resolution mass spectrometers and repeated sampling across vents.
