Tom Rae Wins DarkSky Award With 330-Foot Cave Glow-Worm Photo

Tom Rae took first place in DarkSky International’s Capture the Dark contest’s “Creatures of the Night” category with a cave image shot after a roughly 330-foot rappel in New Zealand’s North Island.
The winning photo shows glow worms lighting the cave below the Southern Cross, a composition Rae captured as a composite panorama with tracked skies.
Rae said dense humidity, faint glow-worm light and long exposures pushed his skills “to the limit” during the nighttime shoot.
DarkSky’s annual contest highlights night photography and supports the nonprofit’s broader campaign to reduce light pollution.
