Summary
Los Angeles jurors found Kevin Eduardo Cataneo Salazar guilty Monday of murdering Deputy Ryan Clinkunbroomer in the Sept. 16, 2023 ambush shooting at a red light near the Palmdale sheriff's station.
Jurors also upheld special-circumstance allegations that Salazar killed a peace officer, lay in wait, fired from a vehicle, and personally used and discharged a .22-caliber revolver.
Prosecutors said Salazar told undercover jail operatives he had wanted for years to kill a police officer and described following officers, parking, waiting and playing music to prepare.
Wednesday's next trial phase will decide whether Salazar was sane at the time; a sane finding could bring life in prison, while an insanity finding would send him to a state hospital.
