PGA Tour Unveils 2028 Postseason With 90-Player Finale and 32-Man Match-Play Championship

Q: Which two iconic courses will secure the rights to host professional golf's unprecedented two-week match-play showdown?

They have not been named yet. The PGA TOUR said the two host courses for the new two-week match-play TOUR Championship, which begins in 2028, are still being evaluated and will be announced with the full 2028 schedule on Feb. 22, 2027, at PGA TOUR headquarters in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. What is clear is that East Lake will no longer be the permanent host starting in 2028, and the event will rotate among prestigious venues. Reporting tied to the announcement said the TOUR is targeting renowned, even historic, courses and has already begun site visits. Some outside reports mentioned speculative possibilities such as Pine Valley, Cypress Point and Seminole, but the TOUR itself has not confirmed any pair of courses. So, no two iconic courses have “secured the rights” yet in any official sense; the selection remains unresolved pending the 2027 announcement.

2028 will bring a split PGA Tour postseason: a 72-hole Championship Series finale for 90 players will set the final points list, seasonlong champion and bonus payouts before a separate Tour Championship begins.
The reworked Tour Championship will take the top 32 into three rounds of group play across eight four-man groups, then send 16 players into a two-week match-play bracket to decide the Tour champion.
Brian Rolapp and player adviser Keith Mitchell said the redesign answers player objections to letting one head-to-head match decide the season, while still adding the fan and TV appeal the tour says match play delivers.
The format is the PGA Tour's first postseason use of match play and its first tour match-play event since the 2023 WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play; the compact field also lets the event rotate among new venues.
Feb. 22, 2027 is when the tour plans to announce the full 2028 Championship Series lineup and sites, as it reshapes its schedule to finish the postseason before the NFL regular season starts.
