New Mexico accounted for the highest China trade exposure among U.S. states in 2025, with China making up 18% of its total goods trade.
That share came from $4.9 billion in trade with China out of $27.4 billion overall, including $3.1 billion in exports and $1.8 billion in imports.
Washington ranked second at 13.6% and California third at 12.8%, though California still led by dollar value at $86.3 billion in trade with China.
California’s share fell sharply from 20.5% in 2024 after 2025 tariff changes and the end of duty-free de minimis treatment for Chinese shipments.
Across all 50 states, U.S.-China goods trade totaled $402.6 billion in 2025, down 18.7% from 2024, showing how tariff and supply-chain shifts are reshaping state-level exposure.
