Taiwan July Retail Sales Hit Record NT$418.3 Billion as Food Service Rises to NT$88.7 Billion

Taiwan’s July retail sales rose 7.7% year on year to a record NT$418.3 billion for the month, while food and beverage sales increased 2.5% to a July record NT$88.7 billion, extending annual gains to a sixth straight month.
A 12.6% jump in auto-related purchases, summer-break shopping and entertainment, and business promotions drove retail growth; department stores gained 9.6% and computer and home appliance stores 12.5%.
Food service growth lagged the ministry’s 4.7% to 7.7% forecast after Typhoon Bavi, though beverage shops still rose 9.7%, catering and group meals 7.7%, and restaurants 0.8%.
In the first seven months, retail sales climbed 4.6% to a record NT$2.88 trillion and food and beverage sales rose 3.9% to NT$642.2 billion, also a record for the period.
For August, the ministry expects retail sales to grow 5% to 8% and food and beverage sales 1% to 4%, helped by Father’s Day, Lovers’ Day, Ghost Festival demand and the Taipei Dome’s new Garden City mall.
