Mamdani Launches 5-Day Fast Track for NYC Housing Emergencies

New York City will fast-track emergency Housing Court cases involving tenant health and safety risks, with judges ordered to speed the most severe landlord-negligence disputes.
Cases qualifying for the new Unified Court System include buildings where at least one-third of units face open vacate orders or immediately hazardous essential-service violations, and cases where families have been forced from their homes.
In disputes alleging persistent and extreme negligence, judges will require parties to return to court within five days after service is completed, a step Mamdani said could also support bids to replace building management.
Mamdani said landlords who cannot meet legal obligations should not control those properties, but he acknowledged enforcement remains unresolved if violators fail to appear after the five-day deadline.
