Newsom Plans Suit Over Trump Mail-Voting Order After 6-3 Supreme Court Ruling

California Gov. Gavin Newsom said the state will sue again to block Trump administration mail-voting restrictions after the Supreme Court let the order take effect while litigation continues.
The 6-3 ruling lifted an injunction that had blocked the order in 23 states before November's midterms, but the court said it was addressing only the injunction, not the order's ultimate legality.
Trump's order tells federal agencies to build citizenship-based voter lists and directs USPS to deliver mail ballots only to people on approved lists; USPS and the Justice Department said they would begin implementation.
In Sacramento, Newsom also backed AB 282 and SB 259, California bills creating new felonies for seizing ballots or election records and for interfering with mail-ballot delivery or return.
The majority said states lacked standing because the DHS citizenship-list provision binds federal agencies, while Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson dissented.
