$324,000 in estimated prison-value contraband was intercepted at Sussex I State Prison after staff found a suspicious package around 1:30 a.m. Monday following an attempted drone incursion.
The package held 1 pound of suspected methamphetamine, 17 cellphones with charging cables, 20 sheets of paper soaked in an unknown liquid, plus SIM cards, USB Wi-Fi adapters and hex wrenches.
Virginia corrections officials also recovered tobacco, cigarettes, cigars, 30 disposable lighters, tattoo ink, perfume and glue, underscoring how varied drone-smuggling payloads can be.
VADOC Director Joseph Walters said the seizure showed increasingly sophisticated smuggling methods, and the agency's Office of Law Enforcement Services is still investigating the incident.
