Summary
A week after the Aug. 19 attack, 27-year-old Alexis Rowan said she is showing her neck scar to her 5- and 7-year-old children to teach awareness, calm decision-making and survival.
Rowan said a man slashed her neck on the Havasupai Reservation after she asked for directions, then attacked from behind as she told someone by phone she did not feel safe.
Ring camera footage captured Rowan bleeding heavily, screaming and fighting back under roughly 60 pounds of hiking gear until a nearby gift-shop worker came out, scared off the attacker and sheltered her.
Federal authorities later arrested the suspect using pings from the cellphone Rowan said he stole, and video showed him being taken into federal custody by helicopter.
Rowan and her mother are now urging women and children to learn self-defense, scream for help and stay alert, saying the footage shows what fighting for your life actually sounds like.
