Summary
A TikTok video posted Wednesday shows Donald Trump crossing out “Lake Ontario” on a map and writing “LAKE AMERICA,” a day after he said the U.S. was seriously considering the change.
The stunt came as Washington and Ottawa’s dispute worsened after the U.S. imposed 50% tariffs on $20 billion of Canadian goods and Canada answered with retaliatory levies of up to 50%.
Trump tied the proposed rebranding to the breakdown with Ontario, saying the U.S. did not expect to do much business with the province any longer; he also invoked last year’s “Gulf of America” rename.
Any official U.S. change would run through the Board on Geographic Names, but Canada and other countries would not be required to adopt a new name for the shared Great Lake.
