Parton died Tuesday at 80, and Alabama’s Imagination Library director said support for both the plate and child registrations has “gone crazy” in the past 24 hours.
$50 from each annual plate would go to the Imagination Library program in the vehicle owner’s county, creating recurring local funding; one plate can cover books for two children each month for nearly two years.
About 114,000 Alabama children are enrolled in the program, which mails free books monthly from birth to age 5 and has gifted more than 300 million books worldwide since Parton launched it in 1995.
Alabama expanded the program statewide in 2023, reached all 67 counties in early 2025, and now provides 50% of funding for participating children.
