Hochul Rejects Trump’s Lake America Order as Canada Plans 50% Tariff Retaliation

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said the state will keep using “Lake Ontario,” rejecting President Donald Trump’s order to immediately rename it “Lake America.”
Trump’s executive order tells the Interior Department and Board on Geographic Names to change federal records, but states, Canada and international bodies are not required to adopt the new name.
Mark Carney said the 400-year-old name derives from the Wendat language and vowed Canada would keep calling it Lake Ontario “then, now and always.”
State leaders including Wisconsin’s Tony Evers and Vermont’s Phil Scott mocked or criticized the move as the U.S.-Canada trade fight deepens.
That dispute already covers $872.3 billion in annual U.S.-Canada trade, with Canada set to impose dollar-for-dollar tariffs from Sept. 8 after new U.S. 50% duties on about $20 billion of Canadian goods.
