Dingell Moves to Void Trump's Lake Ontario Rename Within 4 Days

Debbie Dingell said she will introduce legislation Monday to nullify Donald Trump’s Aug. 27 order renaming Lake Ontario as “Lake America,” calling the move “idiotic.”
Trump’s order directs the Geographic Names Information System to remove references to Lake Ontario and requires federal maps, contracts and communications to adopt the new name.
A message Trump posted from USGS Director Ned Mamula said the agency had already switched official electronic records by 4:30 p.m. Thursday, with printed documents to follow in coming days.
Dingell’s proposed “Hands Off Our Great Lakes Act” would declare the order and actions taken under it to have no force or effect, setting up a direct clash over federal naming authority.
Mark Carney pushed back from Canada, saying the 400-year-old name predates both Canadian Confederation and the U.S. Declaration of Independence and insisting it remains Lake Ontario.
