UK telecom executives warned the country could fall behind in AI because mobile networks are not being upgraded fast enough to handle a coming surge in AI-driven traffic from consumers and businesses.
57th globally for network performance, 70th for download speeds and 55th for reliability, the UK already trails every EU member state and every other G7 country on mobile coverage, according to Which? data.

The industry is pressing for planning reform and infrastructure reliefs, arguing that with AI embedded in devices within two or three years, weak networks could become a broader national competitiveness problem.
