Summary
Three scenes Shailene Woodley filmed as Mary Jane Watson with Andrew Garfield were removed from 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, she said in a SAG-AFTRA talk.
Woodley said she was told about a year later that the studio had introduced too many new characters and wanted to wait until Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy storyline ended before bringing in Mary Jane.
That plan never materialized because the follow-up film was not made, leaving Woodley’s version of Mary Jane unseen more than a decade later.
The role remains in limbo even after Garfield returned in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home; he has rejected Avengers: Doomsday but has said he could play Spider-Man again if the project were “very weird.”
