Q: With Denise Gomes and Song Yadong securing massive upsets, is the UFC's old guard finally giving way to a new era?

Not yet, but UFC Shanghai was a strong sign of transition. Song Yadong’s knockout of Umar Nurmagomedov was the bigger statement. Nurmagomedov entered as a heavy favorite and a likely bantamweight title challenger, but Song’s takedown defense, composure and perfectly timed uppercut flipped the division’s immediate pecking order. At 28, Song is not a newcomer, but this was the kind of win that moves a fighter from perennial contender to genuine title threat. Gomes, still only 26, pushed her winning streak to five, now the longest active run in the division, and tied Jessica Andrade for the most knockouts in UFC strawweight history with four. Beating a former title challenger on the road gives her the clearest proof yet that she belongs in the title conversation rather than the prospect category. Still, “old guard” may be too broad. Yan and Nurmagomedov are not fading legends so much as established contenders who were beaten by fighters entering their prime. What Shanghai really showed is that the UFC’s contender class is turning over quickly. Song and Gomes did not just score upsets; they changed their divisions’ short-term matchmaking and strengthened the sense that a new tier is ready to take over.
