DeMaio Threatens Lawsuit Over California Bill Taking Effect Oct. 1

Carl DeMaio said he and a coalition have a plaintiff and are drafting briefs to challenge a California law Gov. Gavin Newsom signed last week, with the measure set to take effect Oct. 1.
The law, titled "Privacy for immigration support services providers," shields providers', employees' and volunteers' addresses and penalizes people who post their images on social media.
DeMaio argues the measure criminalizes citizen journalism and blocks scrutiny of taxpayer-funded groups he says are tied to fraud; he said his team has discussed the case with the Justice Department's Office for Civil Rights and hopes DOJ intervenes.
Newsom's office rejected that claim, saying the law has nothing to do with activist Nick Shirley, does not affect journalism and does not conceal fraud, while accusing Republicans of pushing false conspiracy theories.
