Homan, DHS Reject Bus-Stop ICE Targeting Claim as Danbury Detentions Near 50

DHS called Sen. Chris Murphy’s claim that ICE targeted parents at Danbury school bus stops “FALSE,” while Tom Homan said agents are enforcing immigration law, not “terrorizing children.”
One arrest cited by DHS involved Leonel Geovanny Morocho-Arteaga, 28, whom the department said entered illegally, was released in 2021, and was stopped Wednesday with a large kitchen knife in his vehicle.
Homan said he was unaware of the specific bus-stop arrest and would seek more information, but noted ICE no longer follows the former sensitive-locations policy after DHS restored officer discretion near schools, hospitals and houses of worship in January 2025.
Danbury Mayor Roberto Alves said close to 50 community members were detained last week, with ICE activity reported near schools and a daycare; an immigrant advocacy group said four parents were taken while school buses were present.
DHS framed Murphy’s criticism as political and said officers are facing a 1,300% rise in assaults, a 3,200% increase in vehicular attacks and an 8,000% increase in death threats.
