In the course of that operation, U.S. Marshals task force members found a second female at the same home. Officials said she initially claimed to be an adult. That claim appears to have delayed recognition that she was actually a juvenile. Investigators only identified her as a missing child after conducting further checks, which showed she was underage, had left her family, and was also being commercially sexually exploited. Because she had not been reported missing, she was effectively “hidden in plain sight” until law enforcement compared her identity information and connected her to a vulnerable child rather than an adult companion. The rescue became dramatic because it grew out of a targeted missing-child investigation and unexpectedly uncovered a second victim in the same location. After she was identified, Phoenix police contacted her family, returned her safely, and connected them with trafficking-specific support services. Authorities have not announced arrests, and the Phoenix Police Department’s Human Exploitation and Trafficking Unit is continuing the investigation.
