The 70-year-old actor called it “spontaneous thoughtless idiocy” and said there was “no intended maliciousness attached,” apologizing to anyone upset by the moment.
Online backlash spread quickly, with some users calling the gesture disrespectful to sign language and interpreters, while others dismissed it as immature but not unusually controversial for Gibson.
Fan Expo organizers did not immediately comment, and the episode landed as Gibson said in Toronto he is editing and finishing post-production on “The Resurrection of the Christ.”
