MapQuest Jumps to No. 1 App After Rejecting Trump's Lake Ontario Rename

More than 100,000 Sunday downloads pushed MapQuest to the No. 1 navigation app and No. 1 overall free app in the U.S. Apple App Store after it said of Lake Ontario, “We’re not changing it.”
Usage rose roughly 50-fold as the backlash spread: Sensor Tower said U.S. daily downloads climbed 128% from Aug. 26 to Aug. 30, while Appfigures logged 80,000 iOS downloads Sunday versus about 500 a day in early August.
The surge also reached Canada, where MapQuest said it became the top navigation and overall free app in Apple’s App Store; Google Play downloads rose to 20,000 on Saturday from around 1,000 daily.
Trump’s Aug. 27 order gave federal agencies 30 days to formalize “Lake America,” but Google Maps has limited the new name to U.S. users, and Apple Maps had not changed it by Monday.
