Q: Can a six-year-old game truly justify the rumored high price of Valve's mysterious new VR headset?

No. A free copy of Half-Life: Alyx would help market Steam Frame, but by itself it is unlikely to justify a premium headset price in 2026. Alyx still carries unusual weight in VR. It remains one of the medium’s most acclaimed titles, won Best VR/AR at the 2020 Game Awards, and had sold more than two million copies by late 2024. It is also historically important: Valve used the same bundle tactic with the Index, and Alyx is still widely seen as VR’s clearest “killer app.” As a launch incentive, it makes sense. But the economics are weak if the headset lands near the rumored $899 to $1,199 range, or above $1,000 as some leaks suggest. Alyx is a six-year-old game that many core PC VR buyers already own, often from the Index bundle or past Steam sales. Its standalone value is limited further because it is not currently certified to run on Steam Frame’s mobile hardware; the main way to play it would still be PC streaming, not native on-device play. That means the real case for Steam Frame must rest on hardware and ecosystem, not on Alyx alone. Valve’s stronger selling points are the dedicated 6GHz low-latency streaming dongle, SteamOS integration, eye tracking, higher-end displays, and a growing “Great on Frame” catalog approaching 100 certified titles. If Valve wants buyers to accept a high price without new first-party software, Alyx can be a prestige bonus, not the core justification.

Backend code on Steam Frame’s store page points to a promotion that would give buyers a free copy of Half-Life: Alyx, according to strings spotted by Valve watcher Brad Lynch.
The apparent bundle would pair Valve’s upcoming standalone headset with its 2020 flagship VR game, a likely sweetener as the company still has not disclosed Steam Frame’s price or launch date.
Half-Life: Alyx was also included with the Valve Index, and that giveaway remains available when the PC VR headset is in stock.
The offer raises a practical question because the $60 game is not on Valve’s day-one list of 100-plus certified standalone titles, even though Steam Frame is positioned primarily as a PC-streaming headset.
Valve said last November it hoped to get Alyx running smoothly in standalone mode, leaving the bundle as another sign of how it may pitch Steam Frame before the full reveal.
