A new seventh moment of silence will be added permanently to the annual 9/11 commemoration as the National September 11 Memorial & Museum marks 25 years since the attacks.
Families will gather on the Memorial Plaza on Sept. 11 to read the names of 2,983 people killed in the 2001 attacks and the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, while six other silences mark the strikes, collapses and related attack times.
More than 9,000 people have now died from 9/11-related illnesses, according to the World Trade Center Health Program, expanding the toll the ceremony is meant to recognize.
At 7 p.m. and 8 p.m., ABC will air live specials from ground zero and the Tribute in Light, while landmarks in New York and nationwide are invited to glow blue.
The anniversary also extends beyond the ceremony: a new exhibit, "In Their Honor: 25 Years of 9/11-Inspired Service," opens to the public on Sept. 12.
