Payton Tolle turned a routine grounder into an unusual out Monday, hugging Seattle's Dominic Canzone on the first-base line during Boston's 9-8 extra-inning win at Fenway Park.
One out into the third, Canzone hit a weak dribbler toward the mound and slowed when Tolle beat him to the bag, leading the 6-foot-6 left-hander to embrace him instead of making a standard tag.
Tolle said "it just kind of happened" and joked, "Bring it in for the big one," while Trevor Story said the pitcher "gives hugs all the time" and plays "like a little kid."
Boston still needed late drama after the viral moment: Tolle went 5 2/3 innings, allowed four runs and struck out six, and the Red Sox erased a three-run deficit before winning on Story's walk-off single.
The victory lifted Boston to 75-63 ahead of Tuesday's second game of the three-game series, while Seattle fell to 64-74.
