Saturn becomes September’s standout evening planet, rising by about 9 p.m. early in the month and earlier later on as it nears its closest approach to Earth in 2026.
Sept. 23 at 00:05 UTC brings the autumnal equinox, when day and night are nearly equal before the sun’s path drops lower across the Northern Hemisphere through Dec. 21.
Sept. 26 delivers the 2026 Harvest Moon because the full moon falls within 10 days of the equinox; that evening, Saturn rises close behind it in the eastern sky.
Venus remains low in the western twilight but is fading from the evening sky and is expected to switch to a morning-star appearance in November.
Earlier nightfall also keeps summer sky landmarks in view, including the Summer Triangle, Sagittarius and the Milky Way band, extending comfortable stargazing into September.
