DOJ Sues Kansas City Schools Over 2017 Gender Policy, Eyes More District Cases

The Justice Department said its lawsuit against Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools is the “first of many,” with additional district investigations underway and more lawsuits already being considered.
The case targets guidance used since 2017 that allegedly lets students seek names, pronouns, restroom, sports and record changes while asking schools not to disclose their transgender status to parents.
DOJ says those written plans are education records under FERPA and that related meetings can trigger PPRA consent requirements; it says KCKPS refused to come into compliance after an Education Department investigation opened in August 2025.
KCKPS said it fully complies with FERPA and PPRA, called the lawsuit disappointing, and said it would answer the allegations in federal court.
The suit asks a court to bar the district from enforcing the guidance, signaling a broader Trump administration push against school transgender policies and in favor of parental-rights enforcement.
