By comparison, India’s refurbished desktop and laptop market already offers usable business-grade machines in roughly the ₹10,000 to ₹20,000 range, with many options around ₹12,000 to ₹15,000 for a Core i5 system with 8GB RAM and SSD storage. That means a refurbished PC can match or beat JioPC on total cost if you keep it long enough. The tradeoff is that JioPC avoids a large upfront purchase and can make an older computer feel newer, with cloud-based access to up to 16GB RAM and 1TB storage. Jio on Wednesday made JioPC a standalone cloud-PC subscription for any internet user in India, no longer limiting the service to its own broadband customers.
Plans start at ₹1,000 for two months and scale to 8 virtual CPUs, 16GB RAM and 1TB storage, letting PCs up to eight years old run newer AI workloads without hardware upgrades.
The push targets a market of more than 65 million PCs in use in 2025 as replacement cycles lengthen to five to six years for consumers and about four years for enterprises.
Analysts say Jio could build a lower-cost parallel tier for households and students, but the model faces hurdles from India's preference for owning hardware, dependence on stable internet and competition from refurbished PCs.
Jio is also stretching the definition of an AI PC: its disclosed cloud specifications omit dedicated on-device AI accelerators, leaving the bigger test whether users will pay recurring fees for computing power instead of buying machines.
