Richie Owens said Dolly Parton hid the extent of her illness from even some relatives before dying Aug. 25 at 80 after what her family called a brief battle with cancer.
Owens said Parton had acknowledged health problems in recent months but never publicly disclosed cancer, choosing privacy and optimism instead of worrying family and fans.
Aug. 28 brought a small Nashville burial rather than a formal funeral, Owens said, with only a few relatives present as Parton was laid beside husband Carl Dean, who died in 2025.
Owens said Parton wanted mourners to direct even $50 that might be spent on flowers to her Imagination Library, underscoring the charitable focus she maintained through her final plans.
