$7.7 million will fund Virginia’s first open-architecture quantum computing system at a George Mason campus, with delivery set for early 2027 and commissioning by late summer 2027.
TreQ will design, deploy and operate the system under its Open Architecture Quantum framework, giving George Mason access to hardware that can integrate different processors, software and networking technologies as they mature.
George Mason is pairing the buildout with workforce and research expansion — including a $2.4 million catalyst investment, six postdoctoral roles, three faculty hires and Virginia’s first interdisciplinary quantum master’s degree.
VIPC is providing catalytic support as the university uses the project to attract industry, commercialize research and strengthen Northern Virginia’s position in a quantum market projected to reach as much as $2.7 trillion by 2035.
