Seventy years after sinking off Nantucket, the Andrea Doria is breaking apart underwater, with shifting debris and collapsing sections adding fresh danger for divers.
At roughly 240 feet deep, the wreck already leaves little margin for error; retired Coast Guard Capt. Aaron Davenport said nets, wires, fishing line and sideways interiors can easily entangle or disorient even skilled divers.
John Moyer, who has made more than 100 dives to the site, said the steel hull was already collapsing onto itself by 2022 and had entered a final stage of flattening.
At least 18 divers have died in connection with Andrea Doria expeditions, yet the wreck still draws experienced recreational and extreme divers hoping to see or recover artifacts before it becomes inaccessible.
