Yes — on paper, a single very large AI datacentre could use electricity on that scale. The figure comes from the proposed Cato datacentre at Auchtertool in Fife. Planning material cited by the Scottish Parliament Information Centre says the site could eventually consume about 4 terawatt hours of electricity a year. That is roughly 7.7% of Scotland’s 2024 electricity generation and has been described as equivalent to the annual electricity use of about 1.6 million typical Scottish households. That comparison is plausible, but it needs context. It does not mean the facility would literally switch off 1.6 million homes or draw that amount every second. It is an annual-energy comparison: total electricity used over a year by the datacentre versus total electricity typically used by households over a year. Actual demand would depend on how fully the site is built out and how intensively it is used. A 4TWh annual load is still enormous. Spread across a year, it implies an average continuous demand of roughly 450 to 460 megawatts, with peak capacity potentially higher. That fits the scale of hyperscale AI facilities, which are far more energy-intensive than conventional datacentres because of constant high-performance computing and cooling. So the headline is not fanciful. It is a legitimate way of illustrating scale, though campaigners and industry alike are arguing over what that means in practice for Scotland’s grid, planning system, water use and local communities.
