John Malkovich is not refusing retirement out of defiance so much as out of conviction that acting is still the work he most wants to do. That attitude fits with how he is talking about *Wild Horse Nine*. Even with awards buzz building, Malkovich has stressed that he is less interested in career milestones than in the film itself receiving attention. He has described his career as already long and rich in “spectacular collaborations,” suggesting he sees this role not as a final statement but as another meaningful piece of ongoing work. The role also appears to give him exactly the kind of material that keeps him engaged. In Martin McDonagh’s film, he plays Chris, an aging CIA operative confronting guilt, regret, failing health and the consequences of covert violence before the 1973 Chilean coup. Malkovich has said that, while he shares little with the character literally, he does relate to the emotional act of reflecting on one’s life as one grows older. Recent interviews make his reasoning even clearer: he has spoken openly about aging, mortality and loss, but said there is little value in dwelling on death. Work, he said, remains “the best companion, the best therapy, the greatest joy.” In that sense, taking on his darkest role yet is not a retirement gesture. At Venice, 72-year-old John Malkovich said he has no plans to retire, telling reporters the industry will decide when his acting career ends.
Asked about early Oscar talk for "Wild Horse Nine," Malkovich brushed aside acceptance-speech speculation and said the film's attention matters more than personal competition.
The Martin McDonagh drama premieres Thursday night in Golden Lion competition, with Malkovich playing a CIA agent opposite Sam Rockwell in a 1970s story set before Chile's military coup.
McDonagh said the film reflects his interest in questioning authority and examining CIA actions over the past 50 years, citing Guatemala, the Congo and the Bay of Pigs.
"Wild Horse Nine" arrives with awards-season expectations because McDonagh's last two Venice premieres — including 2022's "The Banshees of Inisherin" — went on to major Oscar runs.
