Yes—but it is still far too early to say UMass is likely to get there. The Rutgers upset changes the conversation because it showed something UMass had rarely shown at the FBS level: credible quarterback play, balance and control against a power-conference opponent. Pop Watson was efficient and poised, the Minutemen rushed for 200 yards, held the ball for more than 36 minutes and scored on seven of 10 drives. That is not fluky desperation football; it is a blueprint. Just as important, the schedule gives UMass a real path. After Rutgers, the Minutemen still have two FCS home games, Sacred Heart and Stonehill, plus MAC games against Eastern Michigan, Miami (Ohio), Ball State and Akron at home. They also avoid needing a miracle season in an independent slate because they are now back in the MAC, where bowl eligibility is more realistic. Reaching six wins is suddenly imaginable. But one upset does not erase 14 years of evidence. Since joining FBS in 2012, UMass had been 28-142 entering this season, had never won more than four games in an FBS season and remains the only current FBS program without a bowl appearance. Rutgers also helped by turning the ball over four times, so repeating this formula weekly is another matter. The fairest read is that UMass now has its best early bowl case in years. The Rutgers win does not make a bowl berth probable yet, but it makes it plausible—and for this program, that alone is historic.
