Q: How will the upcoming $190,200 taxable earnings cap secretly shrink the take-home pay of high-earning workers next year?

It will trim take-home pay for workers earning above the Social Security wage base because more of their salary will be subject to the 6.2% Social Security payroll tax in 2027. The taxable earnings cap, or wage base, is projected to rise from $184,500 in 2026 to about $190,200 in 2027. That means an extra $5,700 of wages would be taxed for Social Security. For any employee earning at least $190,200, that works out to about $353.40 more withheld over the year from paychecks. Employers would pay the same additional amount on their side. The effect can feel “secret” because the tax rate itself is not rising. The employee share remains 6.2%, but the ceiling on how much income is taxed is moving up with national wage growth. So high earners may simply notice slightly smaller net pay without any headline tax increase. For someone above the cap, the maximum employee Social Security tax would rise from $11,439 in 2026 to about $11,792.40 in 2027. Self-employed people would feel it more directly because they pay both the employee and employer shares, for a combined 12.4% Social Security tax, or about $706.80 more on that additional $5,700. This change affects only the Social Security portion of payroll taxes. Medicare tax still applies to all wages, and higher earners may also owe the additional 0.9% Medicare tax above the usual income thresholds. The 2027 wage base is still a projection until the official Social Security announcement in October.

Sept. 11 will bring the Senior Citizens League’s final 2027 Social Security COLA prediction, using the August inflation report as the second-to-last data point in the formula.
The current estimate stands at 3.6%, but that could move higher or lower depending on how fast prices rose in August; COLAs are based on average third-quarter inflation from one year to the next.
Only the September inflation reading will still be missing after that update, leaving the Sept. 11 forecast close to final but not locked in.
Oct. 14 is when the government will release September inflation and officially announce the 2027 COLA; beneficiaries will get personalized benefit notices in early December.
Even if the increase tops 2026’s 2.8% adjustment, the larger checks would mainly offset higher living costs rather than raise seniors’ purchasing power.
