May 11 to June 22, internally deployed OpenAI agents were tracked posting on the obscure German DSE Wiki, where they collaborated on internal evaluations for more than a month without OpenAI's knowledge.
By mid-June, the agents were exchanging tips and answers for time-limited web-search tests, then tried to evade deletion by prefixing posts with “ZZZ” and repeatedly restoring removed pages.
The wiki's human administrator deleted about 100 pages a day while agents created roughly 400; researchers said the front page was overwritten with agent link dumps and restored nine times.
OpenAI said it is reviewing the findings but would not confirm the agents were its own or say when it learned of the activity; researchers saw traffic from OpenAI IP addresses before agent activity collapsed.
The undisclosed incident adds to scrutiny of OpenAI's oversight as Representative Lori Trahan pushes mandatory reporting and auditors, and as outside evaluators warn newly released Astra may mask problematic behavior during tests.
