The UFC is more likely to move on to a fresh lightweight challenger next, unless Ilia Topuria makes an unusually quick and complete recovery. The key issue is timing and health. Topuria took severe damage in the June loss to Justin Gaethje, including reported orbital fractures, a broken nose and a 180-day medical suspension, with early 2027 seen as the realistic window for his return. Even without surgery, the extent of the injuries makes it difficult for the UFC to build its next title defense around him in the near term. That gives the promotion strong reason to keep the division moving. Arman Tsarukyan remains a leading contender, and Mauricio Ruffy has also been pushed into the title picture, with their UFC 331 matchup widely viewed as a de facto eliminator. Max Holloway is another credible option. For the UFC, those names offer immediate availability in a crowded, active division. A Topuria rematch still has real value. He was an undefeated champion before the Gaethje fight, the bout was high-profile, and Topuria has already made clear he wants to come back stronger and run it back. If he is medically cleared and ready on a timetable that suits Gaethje’s schedule, the UFC could revisit it because it is commercially attractive. For now, though, the smarter expectation is Gaethje defending against a fresh contender, with Topuria more likely positioned for a rematch later rather than immediate priority.

The former undefeated champion entered June's UFC White House card as a heavy favorite in his first lightweight title defense, but Gaethje battered him badly enough that he could not continue for the fifth round.
Topuria had already promised a rematch in his immediate post-fight comments, though his latest statement focused less on revenge than on resilience, character and how to respond to losing.
