Summary
At least one person was killed, two were in critical condition and six had been rescued after a five-storey hostel near Delhi University collapsed around 13:30 local time.
Up to 50 people were believed to be inside the Satya Niketan building, called Hostel Daze, and some trapped students were reportedly calling rescuers from under the rubble.
Basement excavation work was underway at the property, and a nearby shop owner said weak lower pillars gave way after work to expand income-bearing space.
An adjacent building was evacuated as a precaution, another nearby structure was also reported collapsed, and police were searching for the hostel owner.
The National Students' Union of India demanded an investigation into the collapse, sharpening scrutiny of construction safety in student housing.
