UCR Model Predicted 8.8 Kamchatka Quake Zone From GPS Data

A UCR study published Sept. 5 said its model identified in advance the exact Kamchatka fault segment that later ruptured in the 2025 magnitude 8.8 earthquake.
Using GPS measurements of tiny ground shifts, the method maps locked fault patches—asperities—where stress has built to a breaking point, aiming to show where a major quake is most likely.
The researchers said the approach does not predict when an earthquake will strike or how large a tsunami will be, and it has so far been validated on just one known major event.
Offshore data remain the main constraint because the most dangerous subduction faults often lie beneath the ocean, though seafloor acoustic sensors and a new satellite may expand coverage.
The team is now testing the method in Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Chile, the U.S. Northwest and California, where it could sharpen long-term hazard planning rather than replace preparedness.
