More than 200 people attended a Socialism 2026 session where Da’Shaun L. Harrison called the diet industry’s policing of “Black fat flesh” a form of “body fascism.”
Harrison argued BMI, the “obesity epidemic” and medical institutions are tools of surveillance and control, saying diet culture trains obedience, self-denial and discipline.
GLP-1 drugs such as Ozempic also drew criticism, with Harrison linking efforts to treat fatness as a public-health issue to racial control and state power.
Chicago’s four-day conference, organized by Haymarket Books, featured more than 100 discussions; the panel was part of a broader “Health Fascism” series on body politics, disability and race.
Jonathan Alpert, a psychotherapist interviewed after clips spread on X, said criticisms of BMI can be valid but framing weight advice as “body fascism” turns medical guidance into ideology.
