Infleqtion Launches Japan's First 50-Qubit Quantum Computer, Targeting 500 Qubits

Shunkai, Japan’s first operational neutral-atom full-stack quantum computer, has entered service with about 50 qubits under Infleqtion’s launch.
JST selected Infleqtion for its Quantum Moonshot program to move the technology from R&D into an operational platform supporting Professor Kenji Ohmori’s team at the Institute for Molecular Science.
The next phase of the project, which began in April 2026, aims to improve integration, stability and scalability, first toward roughly 500 qubits and ultimately a fault-tolerant system with up to 10,000 physical qubits.
External users are expected to gain access to the system for application development and quantum error-correction research across academia and industry.
The launch comes as Japan’s quantum computing market is projected to grow from $84.7 million in 2025 to $555.5 million by 2033, while the global market could reach $7.7 billion by 2031.
