Ground-penetrating radar mapped St. Clare’s Convent about 1 meter below a Roskilde soccer field during surveys for a planned underground parking facility.
ROMU said the scans revealed a well-preserved complex with rooms, columns, cloisters and a church, with the eastern wing showing especially clear rooms and vault pillars.
The convent, one of medieval Roskilde’s five monastic sites, measures roughly 230 by 230 feet and was thought lost because it lacked ancient-monument protection before its 16th-century demolition.
About 500,000 bricks were sold off after that demolition, but archaeologists say surviving foundations and lower walls could still yield artifacts, burials and evidence of the nuns’ daily life and international ties.
