Summary
Five people killed in Sunday’s Miami crash were all inside a cleaning-company van carrying seven people, NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy said after surveying what she called “utter devastation.”
The Boeing 767 traveled about 1,300 feet past the paved surface, tearing through grass, fencing, navigational equipment and vehicles before stopping near a roadway outside airport property.
Investigators are focusing on whether the jet touched down too late to stop safely; video appears to show it staying airborne deep into the runway, with speed data from the flight recorder expected Tuesday.
Three people were critically injured and two others hospitalized, while the crash shut runways and continued to disrupt Miami traffic Monday after 160 cancellations and more than 300 delays Sunday.
