More than 170,000 pages of air-quality reports, contamination records and internal correspondence are being released Tuesday after city officials said they were hidden in 68 boxes for over two decades.
The records suggest official assurances after the Sept. 11 attacks were misleading: health officials were still detecting asbestos 10 months later as far as half a mile from the World Trade Center site.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani ordered the disclosure through an online portal ahead of the attacks' 25th anniversary in Lower Manhattan.
His administration plans over the next year to review, redact and publish additional papers from municipal and insurance offices on the environmental toxins linked to 9/11.
