Honolulu added the zoo and all six municipal golf courses to Tuesday closures, expanding shutdowns as Hurricane Lowell nears the islands.
Oahu public schools, University of Hawaii campuses, judiciary facilities and non-essential state and city offices will also close, with officials expecting the storm’s strongest conditions overnight.
Essential services are set to continue where possible: TheBus, Skyline and TheHandi-Van plan normal service, and residential trash collection and refuse facilities remain open if conditions allow.
Nanakuli Elementary opened at 5 p.m. Monday as a hurricane refuge area, while the city suspended permitted camping and outdoor park activities from 6 p.m.
Officials urged residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel Tuesday morning as crews assess damage risks from destructive winds, flash flooding and damaging surf.
