Samsung’s Galaxy Z8 lineup sold 8% more in its first two weeks than the Galaxy Z7 series, according to Counterpoint, helping 2026 weekly smartphone sales move back above the 2025 baseline after launch.
Week 32 marked a sharp reversal because Z8 pre-orders converted into deliveries and pent-up demand was released, even as higher memory prices had pushed smartphone selling prices to record levels and delayed upgrades through most of the second quarter.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 accounted for about 57% of Z8 series sales, with Counterpoint attributing the strength to its new passport-style form factor, tablet-like unfolded screen and multitasking appeal.
Stockouts at some retailers constrained initial supply, but Counterpoint expects Z8 sales to stay relatively stable as availability improves.
The next test comes within weeks as Apple is expected to unveil its first foldable iPhone, setting up a fight for premium upgraders and Samsung’s existing foldable user base.
