Judge Denies Corie Walsh Release in 2-Year-Old Son's Murder Case

A Will County judge denied Corie Walsh pretrial release Tuesday, rejecting her bid to remain in a locked hospital setting after prosecutors said she killed her 2-year-old son, Barrett.
Court filings say Walsh, 38, told officers she killed the boy because she believed he was the "devil" and the "anti-Christ," and prosecutors said her later hospital statements matched physical evidence.
Police found Barrett hanging from a basement rafter on Sept. 1; a preliminary autopsy said he died of asphyxia by strangulation. Walsh was later found in a bathtub with self-inflicted cuts after a neighbor took away a knife.
Walsh faces 3 counts of first-degree murder, and prosecutors argue she poses a threat to her husband and 3 surviving children. If convicted in the death of a child under 12, she faces 60 to 100 years without early release.
Defense lawyer Andrea Lyon said Walsh was psychotic and will contest the first-degree murder charges, while leaving open another request for pretrial release as the case proceeds in Will County.
