Chris Rock Says $30 Million Homes Expose Los Angeles's Dark Underbelly

Chris Rock said Los Angeles masks a “dark underbelly,” arguing Hollywood now prizes fame over greatness and that the city’s contradictions are impossible to ignore.
In a Variety interview published Tuesday, the 61-year-old pointed to $30 million-$40 million homes displayed near The Ivy while a homeless man sleeps outside, calling that split central to his view of L.A.
That disparity also shapes “Misty Green,” the indie film Rock is directing about a broke, washed-up actress in Los Angeles, which he said reflects the city’s “wonky priorities.”
Rock, who keeps homes in New York and Los Angeles, said he still loves parts of the city but framed its social problems as far more important than the 2022 Oscars slap by Will Smith.
He added he would return to the Academy Awards only if nominated, saying he does not expect that to happen.
